ive been thinkin about denis villeneuve's dune again and GOD it's such a good movie. easily one the best if not the best theater experiences ive ever had. going in i knew nothing other than seeing a poster or two and thinking it looked kinda neat. my god i was not expecting to be so enthralled i couldn't take my eyes off the screen for the whole runtime.
(i know a lot of the feeling of the world of dune comes straight from the books and i have total respect for them but i haven't read them (yet) so im just gonna be talking about the movie as its own entity)
the scale of this movie is INSANE! the design of the ships is incredible, the sets are incredible, and they used REAL SETS for a lot of the movie! not just green screen sound stages and VFX! this movie also has literally the best application of VFX ive ever seen in any movie. there's only one shot i can think of where it looks a little computer generated and not as well put together as the rest of the movie, and other than that, literally every shot is 100% believable and makes you feel like everything you see on screen is real and tactile and full of texture and history. the worlds feel so lived in and ancient, and the characters feel genuine and human. i love that in all of its insane scope, dune is still centered around humanity and humans. there are no intelligent aliens, and there are no computers or artificial intelligence. AND THE WAY THE SHIELDS WORK?? IS SO COOL??? the fact that they stop fast projectiles or will literally cause a nuclear explosions means that all of humanity has to go back to SWORDFIGHTING??? THAT'S SO FUCKING COOL!!! and again this is really praise for the books but it all feels SO extremely grounded and reasonable. the only thing that could be unrealistic is the voice, but even that is just sort of a very powerful hypnosis. everything else is 1000% believable and feels grounded in reality, and that feeling is extremely magnified by the movie's documentary style of filming.
the soundtrack is also absolutely unparalleled imo, hans zimmer knocks it out of the PARK and farther with this. just everything about it, the worldbuilding from the books, the story, the characters, the cinematography, the pacing, the VFX, the sound design, set design, costume design, casting, soundtrack, color grading. all of it. it is just flawless to me and im so obsessed with it.
